As a Wisconsinite, you may have heard that hemp is making a comeback in the Badger State. Decades ago, before cannabis was prohibited, hemp was a dominant crop cultivated statewide. Today, few remember the green fields of cannabis that once dotted Wisconsin’s beautiful countryside. Green Owl Wellness and others are working to change that, and to make Wisconsin-based hemp cultivation a reality. In addition, we are striving to educate and promote the many CBD benefits and uses.

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is the second most abundant cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which renders the user “high,” CBD does not have any psychoactive effects:  it will not make you “high.”  The reported therapeutic benefits of CBD have been impressive. Many people use it as a health supplement to treat and relieve a variety of conditions.

How it Works:

Humans (and all mammals) have what is known as an endocannabinoid system (ECS). Did you know your body produces certain cannabinoids on its own?  The ECS is responsible for that.  It also is involved in many cognitive and physiological functions, like sleep, pain perception, inflammation, fertility, immune system response, and appetite.

The ECS features two primary endocannabinoid receptors:  CB1 and CB2. These receptors exist throughout your body.  CB1 receptors in the brain assist with regulation of mood, movement, pain, emotions, and other functions.  CB2 receptors impact inflammation and pain.

Researchers believe that introducing CBD to your body encourages it to use more of the cannabinoids your body processes more effectively.

CBD to Treat Epilepsy

CBD has recently garnered a great deal of attention.   In 2018, the FDA approved a plant-based CBD drug called Epidiolex for the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome in children and adults. Mainstream medical practitioners and researchers are beginning to acknowledge CBD as a valuable health supplement and potential treatment for many conditions.
